    About Alangudi:

    The village located near Kumbakonam south India. And the main deity is Viswanathar and his consorts Usha Devi and Pratyusha Devi. And it’s only one temple for jubitor (Navagraha in Tamil nadu).

    There is a separate Sanctum (Sannidhi) for Guru Bahwan.

    And the temple constructed during the period of 16 th century. And constructed and renovated by Nayak.

    The Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets (Thiru Gnana Sambandar) known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam (Place).

    The other deities are, Lord Ganesha/Vinayagar known here as “Sri Kalangamar Katha Vinayagar”, Lord Murugan (Subramanian) with his consorts; and Goddess Lakshmi.

    Chakra theertham placed in is in front of the temple. And the theertham was created by the god of Maha Vishnu’s Chakra (Disc).

    Amrita Pushkarani (Theertham) encircling the temple is very famous.


    The God of Siva consumed deadly poison, giving rise to the name Alangudi and deity being termed Apatsahayesvarar, indicating saviour during hard times. The other names of the presiding deity are Aranyeswarar. There are sixteen waterbodies associated with the temple.

    GU –Darkness (Sanskrit), Ru – destroyer.

    “So guru means Destroy the darkness”.
